The Story Behind the Artwork

This piece captures the same night in Dahab, later than the Silver Edition.

After the radiation strike to the side of my head, I left the hotel without explaining anything to the police officer watching me outside. I threw my rucksack from the balcony, said “let’s go,” and walked.

I took position on Masbat Beach, directly outside the Dahab police station — facing the water. I had been told the Russians were taking me in the Red Sea at 6 a.m.

So I waited.

For hours I stood at ease under the moonlight, watching the Gulf of Aqaba and the lights across in Saudi Arabia. No movement. No cover. Just time passing and the sea holding its line.

Somewhere in those hours, the pressure caught up with me.

I turned around, walked back into the police station, and asked the officer to take me into the back room and put a bullet in my head. He cocked his weapon.

I slammed a British one-pence coin — Queen Elizabeth II — onto the desk.
I picked it up. Put it back in my pocket.

That was the decision.

I walked back out, returned to the same spot on the beach, and stood at ease again until first light.

Six a.m. came.
Nothing happened.

This image captures the processing phase of that night — after doubt, after confrontation, after the line was drawn. The purple tones reflect time stretching, the mind settling, and the moment survival becomes deliberate rather than reactive.

This was not calm given.
It was calm taken back.

What This Work Represents

The Purple Edition records:

  • Endurance after psychological breaking point

  • Control regained after self-doubt

  • Survival through refusal to surrender

Displayed with the Silver Edition, the two works document the same location at different internal states:
immediate threat and resolved discipline.

This is not symbolic art.
It is lived record.
